About Dr. Exelbert

Eric J Exelbert MD is a board-certified pediatric intensivist and board-certified pediatrician. He has been involved with recommendations, education, and the initiation of medical cannabis-based therapies in pediatric and adult patients since 2017. He is one of the top medical cannabis experts specializing in the care of pediatric patients, being one of the only Board-Certified Pediatric Clinicians in the state of Massachusets recommending cannabis for children. He is also registered as a recommending physician in the Medical Marijuana Use Registry in Florida, meaning that he is permitted to authorize the use of medical cannabis for qualifying patients.

Dr. Exelbert sees patients of all ages and all diagnoses, and he has great interest and expertise in complex pediatric and adult cases. These complex cases often require a non-traditional treatment approach, which may include the use of medical cannabis when other methods are simply ineffective.

Dr. Exelbert obtained his medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean and he completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics with the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Dr. Exelbert went on to complete his pediatric critical care fellowship at Denver Children’s Hospital, where he nurtured a true passion for pediatric medicine in particular.

As an Intensive Care Physician, Dr. Exelbert interacts with thousands of patients each year. Through handling such a wide scope of diagnoses, an extensive experience base has been cultivated from which he is better equipped to make critical care decisions for unique patient cases.

Through his pediatric ICU experience, Dr. Exelbert has amassed significant understanding of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), a network of endogenous cannabinoid receptors that are located primarily throughout the mammalian immune and nervous systems.

It is this endocannabinoid system which mediates the therapeutic effects of medical marijuana. In many conditions, dysfunction of the endocannabinoid system is involved in pathogenesis. Therefore, the therapeutic administration of cannabinoids proves effective in treating many illnesses because of its restorative effect on endocannabinoid tone and neurotransmission.

There have been copious amounts of research conducted into the roles of the endocannabinoid system and cannabis in epilepsy, anxiety, autism, neurodegenerative diseases, chronic pain, and inflammatory bowel disease, just to name a few. The success of medical cannabis for these as well as numerous other types of syndromes and diseases is well-established.

It  appears that a limiting factor in getting patients the kind of personalized, holistic care they need is the education level of healthcare practitioners with regard to the endocannabinoid system and its pervasive, ubiquitous physiological role in our health and well-being.

In addition to treating young and complex patients, Dr. Exelbert will also work intimately with Palliative Care and Hospice Care patients when end-of-life issues and comfort are paramount. Dr. Exelbert will find the most affordable and compassionate way to provide care to you and your family based on your needs.

Dr. Exelbert dedicated his life and career to treating the most critically ill patients; empathy and kindness are the defining qualities of his care.

Dr. Exelbert looks forward to meeting you, your child, or your loved one.
